Hans Sampath Blok was born in Sri Lanka in 1990. Right after his birth he was adopted by his Dutch parents, who raised him in the Netherlands. He entered the conservatory of Rotterdam at the age of 17 and studied composition, trumpet, conducting and pedagogy. He also attended subjects in baroque trumpet, trombone, french horn, euphonium, improvisation and music theory. Hans moved to Trondheim, Norway, where he obtained his master degree in composition with Ståle Kleiberg in 2017.

Hans his compositions have been played by various ensembles and orchestras like the Northern Swedish Opera Orchestra, Asko|Schoenberg, TrondheimSymphonyOrchestra, NederlandsBlazersEnsemble and the AKOM Ensemble.

He became principal conductor of the contemporary music ensemble NMKEnsemble in Norway and has been guest conductor for many international ensembles.

While often composing and performing contemporary music, Hans has great interest in early music as well. He studied natural trumpet with Susan Williams and Hans Petter Stangnes and played in various baroque ensembles like the Nordic Baroque Orchestra and the Guayaquil Consort.

Aside performing, Hans teaches all brass instruments, improvisation, composition and music theory. He has given masterclasses in a.o. the Netherlands, Latvia, Norway, and Ecuador.

Hans is the founder of The Heritage Project, an art concept that stimulates children to create music and theater shows based on their cultural and environmental heritage. Hans is also the author of the brass method “BrassClass” which is written for all brass instruments and published by Musikkforlagene.

During his musical career Hans has done numerous projects for which he has gained recognition. He received the scholarship award for young talent from VSB Fund and PrinsBernhardCultuur Fund (Netherlands). In Norway he was awarded with the Sparebank 1 SMN Talentstipend and received financial support for his projects from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Norway), FriFond (Norway), Danse- og teatersentrum – Performing Arts Hub Norway, Rikskonsertene (Norway), FundForPerformingArts (Norway) and Wim de Monchy Fonds (Netherlands).

Along his artistic interests Hans has a passion for nature and wildlife photography, biology and history. He is a member of the Norwegian Permaculture Association as well as the Norwegian Association of Ornithology. Throughout his life he has become a seasoned traveller/adventurer. He often includes human right issues in his projects and highlights the environment to raise awareness about the importance of preserving, conserving and protecting.
